Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has opened up about his personal experiences with albinism, shedding light on the challenges he faced and his commitment to uplifting others with the condition.

In a heartfelt post on X, Eno said “Growing up with albinism wasn’t easy; I faced bullying, body shaming, and rejection.”

“But today, by God’s grace, I stand proudly. That’s why whenever I see anyone with this skin condition, I make it a point to honour and recognise them, he said.”

Eno’s candid reflection has sparked widespread discussion about the stigma surrounding albinism, a genetic condition characterized by a lack of melanin, resulting in lighter skin, hair, and eyes, often accompanied by vision challenges.

As a prominent leader and the first Governor of Akwa Ibom State to openly discuss his experience with albinism, Eno’s advocacy is poised to inspire change both locally and nationally.

Eno, who assumed office in May 2023, has long been a figure of resilience. His journey from enduring social exclusion and prejudice due to albinism to becoming the leader of Akwa Ibom State is a testament to his determination and faith.

Despite facing bullying and rejection in his youth, Eno credits his success to perseverance and divine grace. His rise to prominence as a clergyman, entrepreneur, and now governor underscores his ability to overcome adversity.

Eno’s openness about his experiences comes at a time when his administration is gaining recognition for its people-centered policies.

Recently named Governor of the Year 2025 by the Nigerian Governors’ Forum for his transformative leadership under the ARISE Agenda, Eno is leveraging his platform to address social issues like discrimination against people with albinism.

Albinism affects approximately 1 in 20,000 people globally, with higher prevalence in sub-Saharan Africa. In some regions, individuals with albinism face not only social stigma but also dangerous myths that lead to discrimination or violence.

Eno’s commitment to honoring and recognizing those with albinism has drawn praise from advocacy groups and community leaders.
