Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, visited the family of the late Peter Rufai to express his condolences.

Peter Rufai, a former goalkeeper for Nigeria’s national football team, was buried recently in Lagos.

Obi arrived at the family’s home in Amuwo Odofin on the morning following the burial, accompanied by former international footballer Sylvanus Okpala.

He met with Rufai’s younger brother Bruce, who had flown in from Spain for the burial, as well as his sisters Bosede and Dele.

Obi spent about an hour with the family, offering comforting words and prayers for the late goalkeeper. He also signed the condolence book.

Obi explained that he was unaware of the burial date until the previous day while he was in Abuja.

He flew to Lagos that morning and went straight to the family’s home from the airport, saying he would have attended the burial had he known earlier. He expressed deep sympathy and wished for Rufai’s soul to rest in peace.

The family expressed their appreciation for the visit. Bruce said the family had felt neglected by the authorities, but Obi’s presence brought them comfort and lifted their spirits.

Some family members were visibly excited when they saw him arrive at the home where Rufai, fondly known as “Dodo Mayana,” had once lived.
