Asaba 2025: National Youth Games set to kick off with music, culture

The Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the 2025 National Youth Games (NYG) in Asaba has announced that top musicians and cultural dancers will perform at the opening ceremony. The event will take place at the Stephen Keshi Stadium this week.

The Games, now in its 9th edition, will officially be opened by the Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Mallam Shehu Dikko, who will represent President Bola Tinubu.

Delta State is hosting the Games for the third time in a row, while Kwara State has hosted it five times in the past. The competition will run from August 26 to September 6.

Although the exact number of athletes and officials has not yet been released, LOC member Festus Ohwojero said the figure is expected to be higher than the last edition.

According to him, more states are showing interest because they see the Games as an opportunity to build a solid foundation for youth sports development.

“We are waiting for the Delegation Registration Meeting to confirm the actual number of participants,” Ohwojero explained.

“But from the information we have, it is likely to be more than the 8th edition.”

He also noted that all facilities needed for the event are ready. “Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has directed that the LOC should give Nigerian youths a befitting Games.

From accommodation to feeding, transportation, and the opening ceremony, everything has been properly arranged,” he added.

Meanwhile, Team Delta is expected to announce its final squad this weekend.

The team has been camping with over 600 athletes at St. Brigid’s School hostel, Delta Sports Commission hostel, and the Hockey hostel in Okpanam.

As preparations near completion, expectations are high that the Asaba 2025 Games will provide a platform for young athletes to shine, while also strengthening national unity and showcasing Delta State’s commitment to sports and cultural excellence.
