Nigeria and Brazil on Monday formalised a new Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) to enhance direct air connectivity between the two countries.

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, announced the development in a statement after the signing ceremony in Brasilia, the Brazilian capital on Monday.

According to Keyamo, the agreement was signed alongside his Brazilian counterpart, the Minister of Ports and Airports, Silvio Costa Filho, in the presence of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

“Earlier today in Brasilia, the capital city of Brazil, I had the honour of signing a new BILATERAL AIR SERVICES AGREEMENT with my counterpart in Brazil, the Minister of Ports and Airports in Brazil, Silvio Costa Filho,” Keyamo stated.

He explained that the agreement would resume direct flights between the two nations, considered the largest economies in Africa and South America under more liberal terms designed to promote trade, tourism, agriculture, education, and commerce.

The BASA is expected to create new opportunities for airlines, foster stronger economic ties, and enhance cultural and business exchanges between Nigeria and Brazil.
