The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has formally confirmed Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum as its substantive National Chairman at its 102nd National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.
This brings and ending to over a year of Damagun’s tenure as the acting national chairman of the party.
The PDP NEC took the decision on Monday in Abuja where the meeting held. This development puts Damagum in the position as the party’s leader heading into its National Elective Convention, scheduled for November 15–16 in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Damagum, who was the PDP’s Deputy National Chairman (North), stepped into the role of Acting National Chairman in March 2023 after the suspension of Iyorchia Ayu, the former chairman, following internal party crises and legal disputes post-2023 general elections.
On Monday, the party’s National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade, administered the oath of office, thus sealing his transition from acting to substantive leadership status.
