The Rwandan national football team will arrive in Uyo on Wednesday, September 3, as they prepare to face the Super Eagles of Nigeria in a crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match.
The game is scheduled for Saturday, September 6, at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.
Rwanda, popularly called the Amavubi (The Wasps), will be led by head coach Adel Amrouche, who is expected to name his final squad in the coming days. The East African side is currently pushing to remain in contention for a ticket to the World Cup and will be hoping to cause another upset against Nigeria.
This match brings back memories of Rwanda’s surprise 2-1 victory over Nigeria at the same venue during a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
That win gave the Amavubi confidence that they can compete strongly against the Super Eagles. However, Nigeria also proved their quality when they secured a 2-0 away win against Rwanda in Kigali last March.
For the Super Eagles, this fixture is more than just another qualifier. A win would boost their chances of finishing at the top of Group C and strengthen their bid for a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Head coach Finidi George and his players are expected to go all out, knowing the importance of securing maximum points at home.
Nigerian fans in Uyo are already looking forward to the clash, with expectations high that the Eagles will put on a strong performance.
The atmosphere at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium is expected to be electric, as supporters rally behind the team in their quest to return to the World Cup stage.
