Young women warned about viral Russian job videos

Job opportunities

The South African government has raised alarm over a dangerous trend of viral videos promoting supposed job opportunities for young women in Russia.

The South African government has raised alarm over a dangerous trend of viral videos promoting supposed job opportunities for young women in Russia.

Authorities say the clips, fronted by social media influencers are being used to entice desperate, unemployed South African girls into a suspicious “start programme” in Tatarstan, Russia.

One video, posted by influencer Cyan Boujee (real name Honour Zuma), showed flashy accommodation and promised jobs, Russian lessons, and fair treatment for Africans, Asians and Latin Americans. The post has since been deleted after sparking backlash.

Boujee, who boasts 1.7 million TikTok followers, insisted it was a “fresh new start” for women aged 18–22, but has not addressed the mounting criticism.

Government officials, however, say the programme is a scam. Clayson Monyela, head of public diplomacy, warned on X: “Do not fall for unverified foreign job offers. If it looks too good to be true, get a second opinion.”

International reports now suggest some recruits end up in drone factories supporting Russia’s war in Ukraine, working under harsh conditions as cleaners, caterers or directly on the production line.

A May report by the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime said recruits are lured under false pretences, adding that the “real objective” is to boost Russia’s drone programme.

South African authorities are investigating the recruitment drive and have urged young women to stay vigilant.
