Six passengers sustained injuries on Tuesday morning after a Kaduna-bound train derailed along the busy Abuja–Kaduna corridor.
The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) confirmed the incident, which happened at about 11:09 a.m. between Kubwa and Asham stations.
According to NSIB spokesperson, Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, no deaths were recorded, but a go-team of investigators has been dispatched to the site to gather evidence and engage stakeholders.
“The Bureau sympathises with those injured and extends support to all passengers affected,” the statement read. “Investigators are already on the ground to determine the direct and underlying causes, with a view to issuing safety recommendations.”
Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with frightened passengers scrambling for safety after the train suddenly went off the tracks.
NSIB Director-General, Captain Alex Badeh, assured that the investigation would be transparent, stressing that the goal was to improve rail safety for Nigerians.
The derailment comes barely three years after the 2022 Abuja–Kaduna train attack, which left passengers wary of the corridor.
