Quick Read
The team is scheduled to depart from Malam Aminu Kano International Airport on Tuesday, heading straight to Asaba, where they will join thousands of young athletes from across Nigeria for the highly anticipated Games
Kano State has announced that it will transport its athletes to Asaba, Delta State, by air for the forthcoming National Youth Games.
This decision was made by Governor Abba Yusuf, who approved the special arrangement to ensure the safety and comfort of the young sportsmen and women.
The Acting Chairman of the State Sports Commission, Ibrahim Fagge, made this known after a meeting with the Commissioner for Youths and Sports Development, Alhaji Mustapha Kwankwaso, in Kano on Monday. According to him, the governor’s decision reflects his deep concern for the welfare of Kano athletes, especially in light of past tragedies.
Fagge recalled that 22 athletes from the state lost their lives in a road accident while returning from Ogun State after participating in the Gateway Games.
He said the governor does not want such a sad incident to ever repeat itself, hence the choice of air travel for the trip to Asaba.
“The governor is a humble and caring leader. He is always ready to use every available means to safeguard the lives and property of Kano people,” Fagge explained.
Kano State will be represented at the Games by a strong contingent of 170 athletes, who will compete in 17 different sports. These include athletics, football, volleyball, basketball, table tennis, and several other events. Fagge charged the young athletes to give their best performance, remain disciplined, and be worthy ambassadors of the state.
To further support the delegation, the sports commission has also deployed two coaster buses to Asaba. These buses, with drivers, will be used for local movements and logistics during the 10-day competition.
Fagge called on the people of Kano to keep the athletes in their prayers, wishing them safe travels and success in Asaba.
He added that with hard work and determination, the state’s contingent could return home with several medals.
