Nigerian striker Victor Boniface is facing new challenges at Bayer Leverkusen following the collapse of his proposed transfer to Italian giants AC Milan.
The 24-year-old forward had hoped to secure a move to Serie A this summer, but the deal fell through after he reportedly failed a rigorous medical test in Milan over the weekend.
With the transfer blocked, Boniface must now fight to reclaim his place in Leverkusen’s first team, where competition for the lone striker role remains intense.
Leverkusen’s managing director, Simon Rolfes, admitted that Boniface has found it difficult to rediscover his form since the start of preseason.
“Unfortunately, Boniface couldn’t handle the pressure at the beginning of the preseason,” Rolfes told German outlet Kicker. “The possibility of a transfer came up because Boni wasn’t as resilient. He’s improved, but the big question is whether we can give him the opportunities to get back to his best.”
Boniface now faces stiff competition from Czech international Patrik Schick and 19-year-old Christian Kofane, both of whom are ahead in the pecking order for the striking position.
Despite the setback, the Nigerian striker has previously dismissed talk of leaving Leverkusen and remains determined to fight for his future at the Bundesliga club.
