Commander of the Mining Marshals, ACC John Onoja, confirmed that his team had established 24-hour surveillance over the affected sites pending the outcome of the Federal Government’s inquiry.

The Federal Government has shut down an illegal gold mining site in Gwagwalada, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), amid concerns over environmental and public health risks.

Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr Dele Alake, said on Wednesday that he directed the Mining Marshals to secure the site following reports that artisanal miners had invaded the area after the accidental discovery of a gold vein during the digging of a soakaway pit near a residential property.

The incident occurred on farmland behind Christ the King College (CKC), Gwagwalada. Alake explained that the action was part of government’s resolve to curb illegal mining activities and prevent potential hazards.

This latest operation comes after similar clampdowns: on 16 August, the marshals sealed another site at District 2 Extension in Gwagwalada, arresting 16 suspects; while on 31 July, they closed an illegal quarry in Kuje Area Council where 13 suspects were apprehended.

The minister disclosed that relevant departments of the ministry had begun investigations to determine the causes of the recurring incidents and recommend preventive measures.

Commander of the Mining Marshals, ACC John Onoja, confirmed that his team had established 24-hour surveillance over the affected sites pending the outcome of the Federal Government’s inquiry.

Alake urged residents to stay away from the areas until remediation efforts are completed, warning of the dangers posed by uncontrolled mining.

He also revealed that government is accelerating the deployment of satellite surveillance technology to monitor mining activities nationwide and bolster enforcement capacity.

“The Federal Government remains committed to eradicating illegal mining and repositioning the sector for sustainable national development,” Alake said.
