Isak set to play first match after 3 months strike

Alexander Isak

Quick Read

Sweden have called up Alexander Isak for their World Cup qualifiers next week, even as the Newcastle striker continues his self-imposed strike to force through a transfer to Liverpool.

Sweden have called up Alexander Isak for their World Cup qualifiers next week, even as the Newcastle striker continues his self-imposed strike to force through a transfer to Liverpool.

The 25-year-old has not kicked a ball for Newcastle this season, training away from Eddie Howe’s first-team squad after accusing the club of breaking promises made to him.

“The relationship can’t continue,” Isak said earlier this month, making it clear he sees his future away from St. James’ Park.

Liverpool, desperate to reinforce their attack before Monday’s deadline, have already seen a £110million bid rejected. Reports suggest they are preparing a second attempt as Isak digs his heels in.

Despite the standoff in England, Sweden boss Jon Dahl Tomasson has kept faith with his star striker, naming him in the squad for the upcoming qualifiers against Slovenia and Kosovo.

It means Isak could return to competitive action in national colours next week, even while his Newcastle exile drags on.
