The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, has lamented over the low turnout in public petitions against corruption in the country.

Kennedy Ebotemen, the Resident Commissioner of the body, spoke about this on Thursday during a visit by Comrade Abu Nmodu, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Niger State Council.

Ebotemen noted that the commission is currently working on only six corruption cases. He further stressed that the decrease in petitions from the public limits the commission’s fight against corruption.

“We are encouraging members of the public to forward genuine information and petitions to the Commission, and assure that petitioners’ identities would be protected under the secrecy laws,” Ebotemen said.

Ebotemen also noted the importance of a collaboration between the ICPC and the NUJ. He also suggested that activities at programmes targeted at strengthening partnerships be considered.

The resident commissioner also noted the need for stronger synergy between the ICPC and the NUJ while pointing out the crucial role journalists play in the fight against corruption. He urged the NUJ to support the Commission’s activities.

“This will further go a long way in strengthening the existing cordial relationship and partnership between our Union and the Commission,” he added.
