The Edo State University, Uzairue, has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of its former Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dawood Egbefo.

Prof. Egbefo, a 58-year-old scholar of History and International Studies, reportedly passed away on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, barely two weeks after formally handing over to the newly appointed substantive Vice Chancellor, Prof. Victor Olawale Adetimirin.

Governor Monday Okpebholo had appointed Prof. Adetimirin as Vice Chancellor on August 8, after which Egbefo officially transferred leadership on August 11.

His passing, announced by the university’s spokesperson, Kelly Quincy Amaechi, came as a shock to the academic community.

While the cause of death was not disclosed, Amaechi paid glowing tribute to the late professor, describing him as “a distinguished scholar, astute administrator, and mentor to many within the academic community.”

He noted that Prof. Egbefo’s tenure, though brief, reflected his unwavering commitment to the growth of Edo State University and to the advancement of education in Nigeria.

“He will be remembered for his dedication, humility, and indelible impact on the history of the institution,” Amaechi stated.

Prof. Egbefo’s death marks a profound loss for Edo State University and the wider academic world, where he was respected for both his scholarship and leadership.
