The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 23-year-old lady, Amarachi Okafor, and her boyfriend, Chinedu Obiora, for allegedly staging her own abduction in a bid to extort money from her parents.

The Command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the development in a statement on Saturday. He disclosed that the suspects had initially demanded ₦15 million ransom before later reducing the amount to ₦3 million after negotiations.

According to Ikenga, Okafor had conspired with her boyfriend and a gang to orchestrate the fake kidnap. The parents, unaware of the plot, paid a total of ₦1.2 million before the police uncovered the scheme.

“The suspects were tracked and apprehended after painstaking intelligence gathering. A total of ₦1.2 million was recovered from them, being part of the ransom already collected,” the police spokesperson said.

Ikenga warned young people against resorting to crime, stressing that the police would continue to clamp down on such criminal activities. He added that the suspects are currently in custody and would be charged to court after investigations.

The incident has sparked outrage among residents, with many expressing concern over the growing trend of fake kidnaps and extortion schemes in the state.
