Disaster strikes Oyo town as fire rips through building

A residential building in the Iyalamu area of Oyo town, Oyo State, was gutted by fire in the early hours of Thursday after a cigarette stub ignited combustible materials.

Although no lives were lost, eyewitnesses confirmed that valuables worth millions of naira were damaged before the arrival of firefighters.

Confirming the incident, the Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, Maroof Akinwande, said firefighters were swiftly mobilised to the scene to contain the situation.

“Upon arrival, our officers found two rooms engulfed in flames. They quickly swung into action and prevented the fire from spreading further. The blaze was completely extinguished, and we sensitised residents on the importance of fire prevention, particularly the need for every household to have a fire extinguisher,” Akinwande stated.

He added that properties worth millions of naira were saved by the intervention of the fire service.
