The District Head of Bagaji Odo in Kogi East Senatorial District, His Royal Highness David Akpa, who was kidnapped on Monday, has regained his freedom.
The monarch was abducted by unknown gunmen on September 1, 2025, and taken deep into the bush. His sudden disappearance created tension in Bagaji Odo and surrounding communities, as residents feared for his safety.
In a statement released by Gift Idoga, Press Secretary to the Chairman of Omala Local Government Area, Hon. Edibo Mark, it was confirmed that the joint efforts of security operatives, local hunters, and vigilante groups made the rescue possible.
The operation reportedly lasted for several days, with the team combing through the forests where the monarch was believed to have been held.
“The Executive Chairman wasted no time in mobilizing a joint taskforce made up of hunters, vigilantes, the police, and the Nigerian Army.
They carried out continuous searches in the bush. On two separate occasions, the chairman himself joined the team in their search,” the statement explained.
The monarch was eventually rescued in the early hours of Thursday. He is currently staying at the residence of the local government chairman, where he is receiving medical treatment and recovering from the ordeal.
Community members have expressed relief over the rescue, praising the efforts of the security team and local hunters who risked their lives to ensure the monarch’s safe return.
This incident once again highlights the rising security challenges in many parts of Kogi State, where cases of kidnapping and attacks by armed groups have unsettled local communities.
Residents are now calling for stronger measures to protect traditional rulers and other community leaders who are often targeted by criminals.
For now, the people of Bagaji Odo are celebrating the safe return of their district head, hoping such an incident will not repeat itself.
