The Duchess, wife of the Duke of Kent and first cousin-in-law to the late Queen Elizabeth II, was widely known for presenting trophies at the Wimbledon tennis tournament for many years.
“It is with deep sorrow that Buckingham Palace announces the death of Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Kent,” the Palace said in a statement.
The Palace added that King Charles, Queen Camilla, and other royals have joined the Duke of Kent, his children, and grandchildren in mourning, while hailing the Duchess’s “life-long devotion” to charities, her passion for music, and her empathy for young people.
As a mark of respect, the Union flag at Buckingham Palace was lowered to half-mast at midday.
