South Africa’s Bafana Bafana delivered a commanding performance, defeating Lesotho 3-0 in the World Cup qualifier at a packed stadium in Maseru on Friday.
Played on Lesotho’s home turf, the match showcased South Africa’s attacking prowess and defensive solidity, solidifying their position in the qualification standings.
The match started with an early blow for South Africa as defender Nyiko Mobbie was forced off the pitch due to injury in the 7th minute, replaced by Zuko Mdunyelwa.
Despite the setback, Bafana Bafana quickly found their rhythm. In the 16th minute, Mihlali Nkota capitalized on a precise assist from Aubrey Modiba to slot home the opening goal, giving South Africa a 1-0 lead.
Lesotho struggled to respond, with their attacking efforts stifled by South Africa’s organized defense. The home side faced further challenges when Katleho Makateng was substituted due to injury in the 41st minute, replaced by Neo J. Thaba.
South Africa continued their dominance after the break. In the 53rd minute, Lesotho’s defence was caught off guard as Katleho Ndamane’s error allowed South Africa to maintain pressure, leading to a substitution with Thabang Moloisane coming on.
The turning point came in the 67th minute when Lyle Foster doubled South Africa’s lead with a clinical finish.
Just two minutes later, in the 69th minute, Oswin Appollis sealed the victory with a well-taken goal, assisted by Foster, making it 3-0.
Lesotho attempted to regroup with multiple substitutions, including Kamohelo Rapuleng and Lehlohonolo Fothoane in the 69th minute, but they failed to create meaningful chances.
South Africa also made strategic changes, bringing on Bathusi Aubaas, Iqraam Rayners, and Khanyisa Sebelebele to maintain their momentum.
South Africa’s clinical finishing and cohesive teamwork were evident throughout the match.
This victory strengthens South Africa’s position in the World Cup qualifier campaign with 16 points, five points ahead of Benin and nine points ahead of Nigeria languishing in fourth position.
