The attackers reportedly do not want the community to be resettled, which may have been the reason for the assault.

Suspected Boko Haram fighters have killed dozens of civilians and soldiers in Darul Jamal, a community in Bama Local Government Area of Borno State.

The attack happened around 9:00 p.m. on Friday. Local and security sources confirmed the incident.

Darul Jamal is a village recently resettled by Governor Babagana Umara Zulum after residents had lived for years as internally displaced persons (IDPs).

One source said that at least 63 people were killed and many others were injured.

“It’s a very sad day. I’m outside my house receiving condolences because my son and brother were killed. We counted 63 corpses, and many more people were wounded,” said a resident from the Bama Emirate Council.

Some of the injured victims were taken to Maiduguri for treatment, while others are receiving care in Bama.

According to witnesses, many houses and vehicles were set on fire during the attack. Most of the killings happened around a school sheltering returnee IDPs, the motor park, and nearby homes.

“It was a coordinated attack. The insurgents went straight to where people gathered IDPs, laborers, drivers, and even security posts and opened fire,” another source said.

The attackers reportedly do not want the community to be resettled, which may have been the reason for the assault.

Officials say the death toll may rise as some of the critically wounded victims are still dying from their injuries.
