The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has addressed recent disruptions on the Port Harcourt–Aba train line, which saw passengers reportedly trekking long distances, including crossing a stream, in search of alternative transportation.

The disruption followed the breakdown of a train at the Imo River on Wednesday, 3rd September, at approximately 16:22 hours.

In a statement, NRC management expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to passengers, explaining that the train, en route from Aba to Port Harcourt, developed an unusual mechanical fault that could not be immediately resolved despite engineers’ best efforts.

“To ensure the safety and continuity of service, an alternative locomotive, Loco 2306, was swiftly deployed to rescue the stranded passengers,” the statement said, adding that “While some passengers opted for alternate routes, others were safely returned to Port Harcourt.”

The NRC said the affected train has been returned to Port Harcourt and is now undergoing thorough repairs to meet NRC’s enhanced quality and safety standards.

Passengers impacted by the disruption are encouraged to visit Port Harcourt or Aba stations with proof of payment to claim either a refund or a replacement journey.

NRC acknowledged public concerns and commended passengers for their patience during the incident.

“We deeply value the understanding shown by our passengers and remain committed to providing safe, reliable, and customer-friendly rail services,” the statement added.

The Corporation reiterated its dedication to the Renewed Hope Agenda and ongoing rail revitalization programme, aimed at transforming rail travel across Nigeria.

Normal operations on the Port Harcourt–Aba line are scheduled to resume on Tuesday, 9th September 2025.
