In a dramatic escalation of regional hostilities, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), in collaboration with the Israeli Security Agency, conducted an airstrike targeting senior Hamas leaders in Qatar’s capital on Tuesday.

The operation, reported as the first of its kind to directly hit Qatari territory, sent shockwaves through diplomatic circles and heightened fears of further instability in the region.

Explosions rocked Doha’s Katara district, with eyewitnesses describing plumes of black smoke rising near a heavily guarded residential area close to a fuel station.

The IDF’s statement confirmed the strike was a “precise operation” aimed at eliminating Hamas officials responsible for orchestrating the October 7, 2023, attacks and ongoing war efforts against Israel

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office declared unequivocally, “Israel initiated it, Israel conducted it, and Israel takes full responsibility,” underlining the unilateral nature of the operation.

The strike came at a sensitive moment as ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas, mediated from Doha with U.S. involvement, were underway.

Israeli officials confirmed that top negotiators, reportedly including Khalil al-Hayya and others, were targeted during the discussions.

Qatar swiftly condemned the attack, describing it as a “cowardly criminal assault” and a blatant violation of international law and sovereignty.

The Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized the risk posed to civilians and pledged to launch a high-level investigation into the incident.

The operation represents a marked escalation in the conflict and risks jeopardizing Qatar’s role as a mediator.

Qatar had long served as a key intermediary between Hamas and Israel, and the breach of its sovereignty may interrupt fragile peace efforts

The U.S. Embassy in Doha issued a shelter-in-place order for American nationals, signaling concern over safety and possible regional fallout.

The strike drew criticism beyond Doha, with regional players like the UAE and Iran expressing alarm over growing instability.

Analysts warn the attack could derail the newly proposed ceasefire brokered by U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff, which hinged on negotiations in Doha.

In the wake of the bombing, Hamas acknowledged the proposal but described it as humiliating, even while signaling it remained open to reviewing the terms

The strike, codenamed “Atzeret HaDin” (Day of Judgment), reportedly targeted key Hamas figures, including Khaled Mashal, who was confirmed killed in the strike, as well as Khalil al-Hayya, Zaher Jabarin, and Muhammad Darwish
