Farmer remanded for alleged kidnapping in Benue

A 25-year-old man, Yusuf Mohammed, was on Tuesday remanded in prison by a Makurdi Magistrate’s Court in Benue for alleged acts of terrorism and kidnapping.

The Magistrate, Mrs Ajuma Igama, did not take the plea of the defendant for want of jurisdiction.

She ordered that the defendant should be remanded at the Makurdi Correctional Centre pending the outcome of investigations and adjourned the case till Oct 6, 2025 for further mention.

The prosecutor, Insp Inedu Friday told the court that the case was reported by one James Agada of Ukporo Igwu, Orokam Ogbadibo Local Government Area in Benue.

Friday said the defendant, on July 18, 2025, with others still at large, attacked Ukporo Igwu village and at gun point, abducted eight persons at River Okpokwu and took them to an unknown destination.

“They used the victims phones to call their relatives, demanding for a ransom of N50 million for their release.

“The gang had lured the victims under the disguise of spiritual fortification.

“During investigation, the defendant was arrested and confessed to committing the crime while others are still at large,” he said.

The prosecutor said investigation into the matter was still ongoing and prayed the court for another date for mention.

Friday also said the offences contravened Sections 97, 3(1) and 4(2) of abduction, hostage taking, kidnapping, secret cult and similar activities Prohibition Law of Benue, 2017. (NAN)
