FIFA has confirmed that South Africa could book their ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup if they defeat Nigeria and Benin lose to Lesotho in Tuesday’s crucial qualifying match.
In a message posted on X (formerly Twitter), the world football governing body explained the possible scenarios:
- Egypt will qualify if they beat Burkina Faso.
- South Africa will qualify if they defeat Nigeria and Benin do not beat Lesotho.
South Africa’s national team, Bafana Bafana, are currently leading Group C with 16 points, six points ahead of the Super Eagles of Nigeria.
A victory in Johannesburg would almost certainly seal their place at the global tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
However, there is still uncertainty surrounding South Africa’s campaign. FIFA has not yet given a verdict on a protest filed by Lesotho over the use of an ineligible player.
Midfielder Teboho Mokoena was fielded in March despite accumulating two yellow cards in previous games, which should have ruled him out through suspension.
Lesotho have formally requested that FIFA award them a 3-0 victory and dock South Africa three points. If FIFA rules in Lesotho’s favor, it could shake up the group standings and keep Nigeria’s hopes alive.
The Super Eagles, who have struggled in recent matches, know that Tuesday’s clash could make or break their World Cup qualification dream.
Without star striker Victor Osimhen, Nigeria will rely on other attacking options to keep their campaign alive against one of Africa’s most in-form teams.
For now, all eyes will be on Johannesburg, where both nations will battle for points, pride, and a chance to feature at football’s biggest stage in 2026.
