A final-year student of National Certificate in Education, College of Education Akwanga, Nasarawa State has been identified as the mother of an abandoned baby recently discovered in the institution’s environs.

The Nasarawa Police Command confirmed this in a statement on Thursday while revealing that the mother of the abadoned baby has been indetified.

Nasarawa Police Command spokesperson, SP Ramhan Nansel, confirmed the arrest and detention of the student to journalists in Lafia

He added that the suspect would be prosecuted on conclusion of investigations.

“The mother of the baby has been identified and arrested.

“The Commissioner of Police has ordered the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Lafia, for thorough investigation and prosecution,” Nansel said.

The student had allegedly abandoned the newborn wrapped in a cloth in the bush near Hope Academy Primary School on AA Koto Street, Akwanga

A resident, who pleaded anonymity, said the baby was found alive on Wednesday and reported to the police for appropriate action.

The discovery of the abandoned baby has sparked outrage among residents, with many expressing shock over the incident.
