“Every politician has ambitions, but you get to a stage where you cannot determine what comes next. If you believe in the party structure, you understand that it’s about consultation, consensus, and the leadership’s direction,” he said.
Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has revealed that he is contemplating life beyond the Assembly and is open to pursuing a governorship position, depending on his party’s decision.
Obasa made the disclosure during an interview on Television Continental (TVC) on Thursday, where he was asked to clarify comments he made several years ago about his political aspirations.
In the earlier interview, Obasa had stated that having served as a councillor and now speaker, the logical next steps would be either senator or governor. When asked if that ambition still stood, the speaker explained that while the desire remains, any move would be guided by the leadership of his political party.
“Every politician has ambitions, but you get to a stage where you cannot determine what comes next. If you believe in the party structure, you understand that it’s about consultation, consensus, and the leadership’s direction,” he said.
He added that while personal aspirations are valid, final decisions must align with the party’s strategic considerations.
Obasa, who recently weathered a political crisis that temporarily led to his removal as Speaker, also downplayed the likelihood of seeking another term in the Assembly.
Asked if he would seek a fifth term as a legislator, he replied, “Not really,” suggesting that his focus may now be shifting to higher political roles.
The Speaker’s comments come amid growing speculation about potential successors to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, whose second term ends in 2027.
