German striker Nick Woltemade, a £65m record signing, made the difference with a powerful header in the 29th minute from Jacob Murphy’s cross. The Magpies then held firm against Wolves’ late pressure to seal the win.
It was a big relief for Eddie Howe’s men, who had struggled for form after losing Alexander Isak to Liverpool in a £125m deadline-day deal.
Elsewhere, Arsenal stormed to the top of the table with a 3-0 victory at Nottingham Forest in Ange Postecoglou’s first game in charge. New signing Martin Zubimendi fired a superb volley before Viktor Gyokeres and Zubimendi again wrapped up the points.
Bournemouth moved up to third with a 2-1 win over Brighton, Antoine Semenyo scoring from the penalty spot after Kaoru Mitoma had cancelled out Alex Scott’s opener.
Aston Villa and Everton played out a goalless draw at Goodison Park, Leeds lost 1-0 at Fulham after a late Gabriel Gudmundsson own goal, while Sunderland continued their solid start with a 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace.
Tottenham will try to join Arsenal on nine points when they face West Ham, while Chelsea could go top if they beat Brentford later on Saturday.
