The French superstar struck early at Anoeta, pouncing on a sloppy back-pass in the 12th minute and leaving two defenders for dead before slotting home his fourth league goal of the campaign.
Madrid’s momentum looked threatened when new signing Dean Huijsen was shown a straight red for hauling down Mikel Oyarzabal on the half-hour mark. But Mbappe wasn’t done. Floating in from the left, he turned provider, carving open Sociedad’s backline and setting up Arda Guler to double the lead before the break.
The hosts came alive after halftime, with Oyarzabal reducing the deficit from the penalty spot following a Dani Carvajal handball. But Thibaut Courtois stood tall, producing two key saves to deny the Sociedad captain as Madrid clung to their advantage.
Xabi Alonso’s men now sit top of La Liga with a perfect 12 points from four matches, keeping champions Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao in the chasing pack.
Madrid boss Alonso, facing his former club, underlined once again that nobody is untouchable in his lineup. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Fede Valverde were benched, while Vinicius Junior was hauled off in the second half after a quiet display.
