Washington is on edge as President Donald Trump has threatened to declare a national emergency in the US capital after Mayor Muriel Bowser announced that DC police will no longer cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Trump, in a post on Truth Social, warned he would “federalize” the city’s security if the Metropolitan Police Department pulls out of the crackdown.

Since Trump launched his takeover of Washington last month, more than 2,000 arrests have been made, nearly half of them undocumented migrants. The president boasted that under federal control, D.C. had transformed “from one of the most dangerous and murder-ridden cities in the world to one of the safest.”

“It has been a beautiful thing to watch,” Trump wrote. “Restaurants, stores, and businesses are packed and, for the first time in decades, virtually NO CRIME. But Bowser, under pressure from Radical Left Democrats, wants MPD to stop working with ICE. If I allowed this, crime would come roaring back. To the people of D.C. — DON’T WORRY, I WON’T ALLOW THIS TO HAPPEN. I’ll call a National Emergency, and Federalize, if necessary!!!”

Trump’s threat comes after Congress refused to extend his emergency control over the city’s police last month. Bowser responded with an executive order restoring what she called the “pre-emergency status quo,” effectively ending MPD’s role in transporting ICE detainees.

If Trump makes good on his threat, the president could deploy the National Guard indefinitely, with no congressional time limits. Already, over 2,000 troops remain in Washington, with reinforcements sent by six GOP-led states. Armed Guard members continue to patrol the streets, rifles slung across their shoulders.

Bowser’s office has yet to respond to Trump’s latest warning.
