The Lagos Police Command has explained why CP Olohundare Jimoh ordered a forensic investigation into the recent death of former Ondo State Social Democratic Party (SDP) governorship candidate, Mr Bamidele Akingboye.

Akingboye contested the November 2024 Ondo governorship election but lost to the incumbent, Lucky Aiyedatiwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He was, however, recently found dead in his home inside the posh Victoria Garden City, VGC estate in Lagos

Some of the family members of the late politician have raised alarm about the cause of his sudden death, noting that it may not be natural.

This speculation was backed up with photographs allegedly showing bruises on part of the deceased’s remains.

The Lagos Police Command said the investigation followed the circulation of the photographs.

Human rights advocates have also urged the police to ensure a thorough, transparent and credible investigation that will determine the actual circumstances surrounding Akingboye’s death.

“The order followed circulation of a disturbing photograph of his body on social media, purportedly showing bruises on his head and raising doubts about the real cause of death.

“The image has sparked suspicion that Akingboye’s death may not have been natural, contradicting earlier reports that he died peacefully at his VGC residence in Lagos on Wednesday,” police said in the statement on its official X handle, @LagosPoliceNG, on Sunday while confirming that CP Jimoh had directed the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to investigate.

“The commissioner has instructed the Deputy Commissioner of Police, SCID, to discreetly investigate the death,” the statement read in part.

It added that detectives, supported by the Command’s Crime Scene Investigation vehicle, had visited the residence where Akingboye’s body was discovered.

According to the command, the area has been cordoned off while forensic experts employ specialised tools and methods to gather evidence and analyse the circumstances.

Akingboye’s sudden demise was announced in a press statement issued by his aide, Oyeniyi Iwakun , on Wednesday.

He said the politician died early Wednesday at his residence in VGC, Lagos.

“Known for his unwavering integrity, humility, and generosity, Akingboye left an indelible mark as a successful businessman and a mentor to many across Nigeria and beyond,” Iwakun said in the release.

“He is survived by his wives, children, grandchildren, and siblings. The family has requested privacy during this period of grief, adding that burial arrangements and further details will be communicated in due course.”
