A 27-year-old Kaduna scavenger, Jamilu Umar, was on Wednesday sentenced to seven months imprisonment for stealing vehicle spare parts.

Umar, a resident of Kawo, Kaduna, was arraigned on a two-count charge of conspiracy and theft.

The Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, however, gave him an option of fine of N10, 000.

Emmanuel also ordered the convict to pay N450, 000 to the complainant as compensation for the spare parts not recovered.

He added that if the convict refuses to pay the N450, 000 compensation, he risks an additional 10 months in jail.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Chidi Leo, told the court that one Mohammed Yusuf, of Abakpa Kaduna State, reported the matter at the Gabasawa Police Station, on Sept. 12.

Leo said that on the said date, the convict and two others now at large, formed common intention and dishonestly broke into the complainant workshop and stole some spare parts.

”They stole some items including, block engine, top cylinder, four connecting rod, bolt and nuts, injector head, oil pumping casing and oil all valued at N1.5 million.

”During police investigation, some of the items were recovered from him,” he said.

The prosecutor said that the offences contravened the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.
