Harry Kane delivered another masterclass on European soil, scoring twice as Bayern Munich defeated Chelsea 3-1 in a dramatic Champions League clash in Germany.
The English striker, who joined Bayern in a record transfer last season, proved decisive once again, punishing Chelsea’s defensive errors and leading the Bavarians to a crucial group-stage victory at the Allianz Arena.
The contest began in chaotic fashion for the visitors when Trevoh Chalobah put the ball into his own net in the 20th minute, attempting to clear a dangerous cross but instead sending it past a helpless Robert Sanchez.
Seven minutes later, Bayern doubled their lead after Moises Caicedo clumsily brought down an opponent in the box. Kane stepped up and calmly slotted the resulting penalty low into the corner, leaving Sanchez with no chance.
Chelsea briefly rallied when Cole Palmer halved the deficit in the 29th minute, finishing superbly into the top corner after being set up by Malo Gusto.
The goal lifted Enzo Maresca’s side, but they continued to live dangerously, with Konrad Laimer and Michael Olise both going close for Bayern before the break.
Kane should have added his second shortly after the restart, but Sanchez produced a brilliant save to deny him.
However, the striker would not be denied for long. In the 63rd minute, a defensive lapse allowed Kane to pounce, rolling the ball coolly into the net for Bayern’s third and restoring their two-goal cushion.
Chelsea thought they had found a lifeline late on when Palmer struck again in the 89th minute after a clever pass from Andrey Santos. But their celebrations were cut short moments later as VAR intervened, ruling the goal out for offside in the build-up.
The disallowed goal left Chelsea players crestfallen, while Bayern calmly managed the closing stages to secure the win.
