Monaco’s Champions League campaign faced an unusual and bizarre start when their flight to Belgium was abruptly cancelled amid chaos on board.
Mid-flight, the team’s air conditioning system failed catastrophically, transforming the aircraft cabin into an unbearable, sweltering sauna. Desperate to cool down, players stripped down to their underwear, drenched in sweat, and fanned themselves with in-flight magazines and whatever else they could find.
Dutch defender Jordan Teze captured the distressing scene on his phone, sharing footage of the half-naked squad. The situation worsened to the point where players were evacuated onto the runway still dressed in their underwear, unable to continue the journey safely due to the oppressive heat.
Rather than risk further issues, Monaco made the decision to cancel the flight entirely, returning home and rescheduling their travel plans for the next day.
The team was on their way to face Club Brugge in a crucial Champions League match scheduled for Thursday, but the delay forced them to scramble to adjust their preparations.
Manager Adi Hutter explained that safety concerns prevented the team from continuing their trip. “For technical reasons, it was impossible to travel, as everyone’s safety was not guaranteed,” he confirmed. The squad will now travel to Bruges a day later, yet the unexpected disruption leaves fans wondering if Monaco can recover in time for the fixture.
Despite the chaos, Hutter remained optimistic, citing their recent successful travels and confident the team would adapt. Among those in the squad was Paul Pogba, who, despite still working towards full match fitness following his return from a doping suspension, remains hopeful of making his debut soon.
As Monaco faces off against a team they haven’t beaten in over 40 years, this bizarre travel nightmare may be the most unusual twist in their European campaign yet.
