Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has apologised for his reaction to a section of Liverpool supporters during his side’s 3-2 loss in the Champions League opener at Anfield.
The Argentine tactician became visibly agitated after Virgil van Dijk’s 92nd-minute header sealed victory for the hosts, sparking verbal exchanges with fans near the dugout.
Stewards intervened to prevent the clash from escalating further before Simeone was shown a red card and escorted down the tunnel.
Speaking at a post-match press conference, the 55-year-old admitted his behaviour was regrettable. “Firstly, I regret the part I played. It’s clear we do not have the right to react. It is not good when we react,” he said.
However, Simeone expressed frustration over what he described as persistent insults from sections of the Anfield crowd.
“We managers are standard bearers, but just as we fight against racism and other abuses in stadiums, we should also fight against insults aimed at managers throughout a game,” he added.
Pressed further about the remarks, Simeone declined to provide details, stressing that coaches must endure such situations.
“My reaction isn’t justifiable, but do you know what it is like to be insulted for 90 minutes? I hope Liverpool can improve that aspect and ensure those responsible face consequences,” he noted.
