Fake ‘Special Force’ leader busted for targeting SUVs in Lagos estates

The Commissioner also urged estate residents and property managers to be vigilant and adopt stronger verification protocols.

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 46-year-old man, Jude Onouha, identified as the leader of a notorious criminal syndicate that specialised in vandalising high-end vehicles within residential estates across Lagos.

In a statement released via the Command’s official account on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, the police revealed that the gang operated by disguising themselves in fake security uniforms to gain access to estates. They reportedly used a modified Mercedes-Benz car jack, crafted to resemble a firearm, to deceive unsuspecting estate security personnel. Posing as law enforcement officers conducting security checks, the group was able to infiltrate multiple gated communities.

Once inside, the syndicate targeted luxury vehicles—including Toyota Hilux, Toyota Highlander, Lexus 650, Mercedes-Benz, and other SUVs—systematically dismantling and stealing critical components such as brainboxes, tapping glasses, wiring systems, side mirrors, and other electronic control modules.

Among the items recovered from the suspect were the fake weapon (a customised car jack designed to resemble a gun) and a cap branded with the words “Special Force,” which he used to reinforce his disguise.

Confirming the arrest, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, described the operation as a major breakthrough in the Command’s efforts to dismantle organised criminal networks in the state.

“The suspect has confessed to his involvement in the crimes and is currently assisting detectives with ongoing investigations. We are actively pursuing other members of the gang who are currently at large and will ensure they are brought to justice,” CP Jimoh stated.

The Commissioner also urged estate residents and property managers to be vigilant and adopt stronger verification protocols.

“We advise residents and estate management to exercise utmost caution whenever individuals present themselves as security operatives. Always verify their identity through the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) responsible for your area. In cases of uncertainty, direct such individuals to the nearest police station,” he advised.

The Lagos State Police Command reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property and called on the public to maintain strong cooperation with security agencies. Investigations are ongoing, and efforts are being intensified to apprehend the remaining members of the syndicate.
