“Our mandate is solely to maintain peace and forestall any breakdown of law and order that could endanger lives and property.”
The Nigerian Army has firmly denied allegations that its personnel harassed or intimidated residents of communities involved in a land dispute in Cross River State.
In a statement titled “Re-Allegation of Troops’ Harassment in Dispute Between Alesi and Ochon Communities of Cross River State”, the 82 Division dismissed the reports accusing soldiers from the 245 Battalion of intimidation, labelling them as “false, misleading, and clearly aimed at discrediting the efforts of troops working tirelessly to maintain peace in the area.”
According to the Division, troops were deployed in Ikom and Obubra Local Government Areas purely for internal security operations to safeguard lives, protect infrastructure, and ensure a peaceful environment.
“Troops of 245 Battalion are currently deployed in the general area for internal security operations. Their presence is strictly to assist civil authorities for the preservation of public order, in full compliance with constitutional provisions,” the Army said.
The military confirmed that its personnel responded swiftly on 19 September 2025 to renewed clashes between the Alesi and Ochon communities in an effort to prevent further escalation and restore calm.
Reiterating its neutrality, the Division clarified that it had no interest or involvement in the ownership or resolution of the disputed land:
“Our mandate is solely to maintain peace and forestall any breakdown of law and order that could endanger lives and property.”
The Army also reassured residents of Alesi and Ochon of its commitment to professionalism, discipline, and respect for human rights, while encouraging community leaders to resolve their differences through lawful and peaceful means.
It urged the public to disregard unverified reports designed to disrupt peace efforts and called on citizens to provide credible information about security threats or troop misconduct through official reporting channels.
