Yauri Local Government Council in Kebbi State has imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew following a deadly clash between rival gold miners in Garin Katta community, which reportedly left several people feared dead and property destroyed.
The violent unrest began on Saturday, allegedly after a miner was killed during a dispute over gold. In retaliation, relatives of the deceased launched a reprisal attack, sparking further violence that quickly spiralled out of control.
According to eyewitnesses, shops were vandalised, motorcycles set ablaze, and residents fled for safety amid the chaos.
Security operatives have so far recovered the body of one victim, who was buried in accordance with Islamic rites.
Announcing the curfew on Sunday, Chairman of Yauri LGA, Abubakar Shuaibu, said the restriction—from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. daily—was aimed at preventing further violence and restoring peace to the troubled community.
Shuaibu revealed that he had promptly alerted the Police Area Commander and Department of State Services (DSS) when the conflict broke out. He added that while attempts were made to identify and surrender the culprits, some miners resisted, further escalating tensions.
“Conflict is harmful, and God is displeased with those who instigate it. That is why we immediately sought military support and deployed security forces to safeguard lives and property,” Shuaibu stated.
He further disclosed that violence reignited shortly after the victim’s burial, as angry miners stormed parts of the town, attacking residents indiscriminately.
Security agencies have since stepped up patrols in Yauri to enforce the curfew and ensure calm is fully restored.
