The Embassy of Japan in Nigeria has conferred the Ambassador’s Commendation Award on Professor Adedoyin Aguoru. The academic and scholar, who teaches English at the University of Ibadan, is currently the Director, Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning at the university.

The award will be presented to Aguoru on October 7, 2025, during the African Association of Japanese Studies, AAJS, annual conference, which will be held at the University of Ibadan.

According to a letter signed by Suzuki Hideo, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Aguoru has been honoured for her “exceptional and unwavering contributions to promoting Japanese Studies in Africa and fostering mutual understanding between Japan and the African continent.”

The Ambassador’s Commendation Award is a significant honor bestowed upon individuals who have made exceptional contributions to promoting cultural exchange, academic cooperation, and mutual understanding between Japan and other countries. Aguoru’s achievement is a shining example of her dedication to academic excellence and her commitment to building bridges between Japan and Africa.

And it serves as an inspiration to academics and scholars across the continent. Her dedication to academic excellence, cultural exchange, and bilateral relations is a shining example of the impact that individuals can have on promoting global understanding and cooperation. As a woman and professor, her achievement is particularly significant, paving the way for future generations of female scholars and researchers.

As President of the AAJS, Aguoru has been instrumental in promoting Japanese Studies across the African continent. Her leadership has transformed the organization into a leading platform for scholars, researchers, and students interested in Japanese Studies. Under her guidance, the AAJS has organized numerous conferences, workshops, and seminars that have significantly contributed to the growth and development of Japanese Studies in Africa.

One of Aguoru’s most notable achievements is the establishment of the AAJS’s official academic journal, “Studies in Transnational Africa and Japan (STAJ)”. Launched in 2019, STAJ has become a vital scholarly platform for researchers and scholars to share their findings and insights on Japanese Studies. The journal has published numerous high-quality articles and has gained recognition globally, further solidifying Prof Aguoru’s reputation as a leading scholar in her field.

Aguoru’s contributions to promoting Japanese Studies in Africa extend beyond academia. She has also played a crucial role in fostering cultural exchange between Japan and Africa. Her efforts have led to the establishment of the Japanese Corner at the University of Ibadan Library, courtesy of the Nippon Foundation. This initiative has provided students and researchers with access to a vast array of Japanese resources, further enriching their understanding of Japanese culture and society.

The AAJS Students Club, established in 2025, is another testament to Aguoru’s commitment to nurturing future generations of scholars and researchers. The club provides a platform for students to engage with Japanese culture, language, and history, promoting a deeper understanding of Japan and its people. By empowering young scholars, Aguoru is ensuring the continued growth and development of Japanese Studies in Africa.
