US warns Nigerians against overstaying visas

The United States Mission in Nigeria has reiterated its commitment to fighting corruption, stating that high-profile Nigerian officials involved in corrupt practices will be barred from entering the United States.

In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), the Mission emphasised that accountability has no boundaries, and even individuals in powerful positions would face consequences for corruption.

“Fighting corruption knows no borders or limits on accountability. Even when high-profile individuals engage in corruption, they can be barred from receiving U.S. visas,” the Mission stated.

This position aligns with longstanding U.S. policy to sanction foreign officials accused of corruption or human rights abuses, including through visa restrictions and financial penalties.

The United States has a longstanding policy of using visa restrictions and other sanctions as tools to promote good governance, accountability, and the rule of law globally. Over the years, the U.S. government has applied these measures to individuals accused of grand corruption, electoral malpractice, human rights violations, and other forms of misconduct, particularly in countries with weak institutions or fragile democracies.
