The police in Borno have launched an investigation into a farmers-herders clash that occurred on Saturday in Modukoruri village, Gubio Local Government Area of the state.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO),  Nahun Daso, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Maiduguri on Monday that the incident resulted in one death and eight injuries.

He said the clash erupted when herders allegedly trespassed into a beans and millet farm belonging to one Modu Fannami, 55, and refused to leave after being cautioned.

“The situation escalated after villagers mobilised to the scene in support of the farmer. The herders attacked them with bows, arrows and machetes.

“As a result, one Modu Zarami, 38, was fatally shot with arrows to the neck and stomach, while another, Mallumta Kyari, 28, sustained deep machete cuts. Seven other villagers sustained minor injuries,” he said.

The spokesman added that Zarami was confirmed dead on arrival at the Primary Healthcare Centre in Gubio, while Kyari was referred to the General Hospital, Maiduguri, for further treatment.

He said the other seven victims were treated and discharged.

According to him, policemen, supported by the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) and local hunters, visited the scene, restored normalcy, and evacuated the injured.

He said the suspects fled the scene, but efforts are ongoing to track them down.
