Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku has announced the death of his father, Roger Menama Lukaku, in an emotional tribute shared on social media.

He died at the age of 58 years.

The striker shared a photo of himself as a small boy with his father Roger in an Instagram post on Monday.

The AS Roma forward described his late father, whom he affectionately called “Vieux Roy,” as his greatest teacher and protector.

“Thank you for teaching me everything I know. I’m forever grateful and appreciate you. Life will never be the same. The pain and tears are flowing big time, but God will give me the strength to get myself back together,” Lukaku wrote, before signing off with “Mon Papa” and a dove and heart emoji.

Roger Lukaku, who was also a professional footballer, represented Zaire (now DR Congo) at international level and played for several clubs in Belgium during the 1990s.

He was widely recognised as the inspiration behind Romelu’s and his brother Jordan Lukaku’s football careers.

Tributes poured in from across the football world following the announcement. Napoli fans wrote “Tutta Napoli ti è vicina” (“All of Naples is with you”), while fellow players and supporters expressed condolences in multiple languages, reflecting Lukaku’s international impact.

Messages of strength and solidarity also came from former teammates and fans in Belgium, Italy, and beyond, many assuring Lukaku that their prayers are with him and his family during this period of mourning.

Roger Lukaku is remembered not only as a skilled footballer but also as a guiding figure who helped shape two professional footballers in his sons.
