Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, on Monday openly threw his weight behind the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of next year’s council elections, telling residents of Tunga Madaki to “reward the party that remembered you.”
Wike, a chieftain of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), made the declaration while flagging off a 7-kilometre road with four-span bridges linking Tunga Madaki to eight settlements. The project is being executed by the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC).
He tied the road to President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, saying the community had been neglected for too long despite giving up their lands for the second runway at the Abuja airport.
“It was unfair that a people surrendered their ancestral lands for a national project, yet had no road to even access the airport they gave land for,” Wike said. “Mr President told me, ‘Whatever they ask for, give it to them.’ Today, we are here to fulfill that promise.”
Wike openly endorsed Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) chairman, Christopher Maikalangu, who recently dumped the PDP for APC and is seeking re-election.
“One good turn deserves another. When you do for me, I do for you. When you fall for me, I fall for you. When you listen to me, I listen to you,” Wike declared, urging the people to return APC at the February polls.
The FCT Minister also took a swipe at past leaders, asking residents to judge them by their records:
“You have had council chairmen before did anyone remember Tunga Madaki? Did they connect you to the airport whose land you gave away? Ask them where they were when your roads were impassable.”
The project is billed for completion in June 2026, coinciding with Tinubu’s third year in office. Wike said he expects the commissioning to be “a joint celebration” between the APC and the people.
The February 2026 elections will be a major test for the APC in the capital, where no ruling party has ever swept all six councils.
