Israeli public pressure is mounting on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to reach a deal that could end the ongoing conflict in Gaza and secure the release of hostages, as indirect talks with Hamas kick off in Egypt.

Recent polls, according to BBC, indicate that roughly 70% of Israelis support ending the war in exchange for the safe return of those held by the militant group. Families of the hostages have been particularly vocal, organizing rallies, issuing statements, and appealing directly to the Prime Minister to seize the opportunity to bring their loved ones home.

In a dramatic move, the families have also sent an urgent letter to the Nobel Peace Prize committee, urging it to award the prize to former U.S. President Donald Trump for his role in facilitating peace efforts in the region. The winner of the prize is expected to be announced at the end of the week.

Meanwhile, indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas representatives commenced in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt. Egyptian and Qatari officials are expected to hold shuttle meetings with both sides in an effort to secure agreement on implementing Trump’s proposed peace plan for Gaza.

Observers say the talks could mark a critical step toward easing tensions in the region, though officials caution that a breakthrough is not guaranteed.
