The United States Embassy in Abuja has issued a strong security warning to its citizens, urging them to stay indoors and avoid all movement on Monday, October 20, ahead of the planned #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest in the Federal Capital Territory.

The protest, convened by activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, is expected to begin at 7 a.m. at Eagle Square, stretching through the Central Business District and toward the Aso Rock Presidential Villa.

According to the Embassy’s statement released on Friday, the demonstration — though declared peaceful — could spiral into violence or confrontation between protesters and security forces. Americans were warned to steer clear of protest zones, avoid crowds, and limit movement across the city.

“There may be roadblocks, traffic congestion, and confrontations between police and protestors that could turn violent around Eagle Square and the Central Business District,” the Embassy cautioned.

It further adviced that children stay home from school and domestic staff commuting from outside Abuja remain indoors, citing possible unrest and road restrictions.

The Embassy emphasized that citizens should monitor local news, maintain a low profile, and review personal security plans, adding that mobile phones should be kept fully charged in case of emergencies.

“Avoid areas where protests are taking place. Avoid crowds. Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests,” the advisory warned.

The planned protest is part of a renewed call for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who has been in detention since June 2021 after his controversial extradition from Kenya.

Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the protest, but security presence across key parts of Abuja is expected to be intensified ahead of Monday.
