Victor Boniface is facing a tough start at his new club, Werder Bremen, because of weight problems.
The Nigerian striker, who helped Bayer Leverkusen win the German league title in 2024, is reportedly struggling to get fit.
Werder Bremen’s sporting director, Clemens Fritz, confirmed the situation to BILD.
Boniface had an outstanding 2023/24 season under coach Xabi Alonso, scoring 21 goals and providing 10 assists in 34 matches.
However, his performance dropped a bit the following season, though he still managed 11 goals in 27 games.
He was expected to leave Leverkusen last summer, but his transfer was complicated. A planned move to Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia failed after he did not pass his medical test. A later deal with AC Milan also collapsed.
Eventually, Boniface joined Werder Bremen on loan, but he has made only four appearances so far.
According to Fritz, Boniface’s limited playing time is due to his physical condition.
“We’ve identified the issues together with Victor and are helping him in every possible way,” said Fritz.
“He is cooperating fully and working hard with extra training, physiotherapy, and a new nutrition plan.”
Boniface is now focused on regaining his fitness and returning to top form for Bremen.
