The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has postponed the screening of aspirants for its 2025 Elective National Convention, which was scheduled for Tuesday, October 28, 2025.
In a statement on Monday, the Chairman of the National Convention Organising Committee (NCOC) and Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Fintiri, said the exercise was delayed due to “unforeseen circumstances.” He added that a new date would be announced to aspirants and party members soon.
“A new date will be communicated once fixed. The NCOC regrets any inconvenience caused by the postponement. All aspirants and party members should take note and be guided accordingly,” the statement said.
The NCOC reaffirmed its commitment to holding a credible and smooth national convention. The convention itself is scheduled for November 15–16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Earlier, PDP had named a 13-member Screening Committee to vet aspirants for national positions ahead of the convention. The committee is chaired by Eyitayo Jegede, SAN, a former Ondo State governorship candidate and respected legal expert.
The postponement comes just hours after former Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, declared his intention to contest for the position of PDP National Chairman. This follows northern stakeholders’ earlier endorsement of former Minister Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, as their consensus candidate.
Some factions of the party, including Lamido’s camp and supporters of Nyesom Wike, rejected Turaki’s endorsement, saying the process lacked proper consultation. The disagreements highlight rising tensions within the PDP, which has recently seen some key members resign.
