Kanu told the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday that, after reviewing his case files, he found no valid charges or evidence against him. He said it would be pointless to present a defence since “there is no case to answer.”

The decision of detained IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, to represent himself in court has sparked a wave of reactions on social media, with politicians, scholars, and entertainers urging the Federal Government to release him.

On X (formerly Twitter), Dr. Sam Amadi, Director of the Abuja School of Social and Political Thought, described Kanu’s move as both symbolic and risky.

“Kanu’s choice to represent himself is a risky political step with serious legal implications,” Amadi wrote, warning that self-representation in a sensitive case could complicate his defence.

Similarly, Senator Ned Nwoko criticized Kanu’s continued detention, stressing that it remains one of the major causes of tension in the South-East.

“I believe Nnamdi Kanu has been held unjustly. His incarceration is the main reason for the crisis in the South-East,” Nwoko posted.

Joining the chorus of voices, popular Nollywood actress Rachel Okonkwo, also known as Nkoli Nwa Nsukka, made an emotional plea to President Bola Tinubu to release the separatist leader.

“We are tired of waiting. Release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu to us. We need our brother back home safe and sound. It’s long overdue,” she tweeted.

The tweets, gathered by PM News, reflect a growing online campaign calling for Kanu’s freedom and a peaceful resolution to the lingering crisis in the region.

Kanu, who has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since 2021, faces charges bordering on terrorism and treasonable felony.

His decision to handle his own defence at the Federal High Court in Abuja has stirred public debate over his legal strategy and the broader political implications of his trial.
