The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has denied reports claiming that it directed schools to restrict students to specific subjects for the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has denied reports claiming that it directed schools to restrict students to specific subjects for the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

In a statement issued on Tuesday by its Acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adeshina, on behalf of the Head of National Office, the Council described the reports as “false and unfounded.”

WAEC said it never gave any instruction to schools limiting subject combinations for candidates, adding that such rumours circulating on social media should be ignored.

“The Council did not issue any such directive nor restrict students from offering any subject for WASSCE 2026 as alleged,” the statement read.

The exam body explained that it has no authority to alter or regulate the secondary school curriculum, as that responsibility belongs to the Federal Government through its education agencies.

“The development and regulation of curricula in Nigeria is under the Federal Government. WAEC only implements approved policies through its examinations,” it said.

It further assured students, parents, and schools that any future curriculum changes would follow due process and not be imposed suddenly.

WAEC urged the public to rely only on official information from the Council, warning against misinformation from unofficial sources.

“Schools, stakeholders, and the general public are hereby advised to disregard the misleading reports,” the statement concluded.
