Real Madrid and the promoters of the proposed European Super League are demanding more than $4 billion in damages from UEFA, accusing the football body of unfairly blocking the breakaway competition.
According to AFP, a Spanish court on Wednesday dismissed UEFA’s latest appeal in the ongoing legal battle over the Super League.
The controversial project, launched in 2021 by 12 of Europe’s top clubs including Real Madrid and Barcelona, collapsed within days after strong opposition from fans in England and threats of sanctions from UEFA and FIFA.
However, in December 2023, the European Court of Justice ruled that UEFA’s attempt to ban the Super League violated European competition laws.
A Spanish judge also declared that both UEFA and FIFA had abused their dominant positions in football by preventing the new league from taking off.
The latest ruling from the Madrid court also rejected appeals filed by LaLiga and the Spanish Football Federation, further strengthening the Super League’s case against European football’s governing body.
The lawsuit seeks compensation for losses incurred as a result of UEFA’s actions, which the complainants say stifled fair competition in European football.
