He stressed that the Bible never promised that everyone would be as rich as business moguls like Aliko Dangote or Femi Otedola, nor did it call for believers to live in poverty.

Nigerian singer and preacher, Banky W, has spoken out against what he described as the “corruption” of the prosperity gospel in today’s church, saying the true message of the Bible is one of provision, not excessive wealth or forced poverty.

Speaking during a recent podcast with media personality Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, the music star turned pastor said many have misunderstood or twisted the gospel’s message for personal gain.

“The prosperity gospel is false and corrupted. The poverty gospel is also false and corrupted,” he said. “It’s a gospel of provision, not prosperity, and not poverty.”

Explaining further, Banky W said God’s promise is to meet people’s needs and bless them enough to be a blessing to others, not to make everyone billionaires or beggars.

“What the gospel says is that God will provide all your needs. God will bless you enough for you to be a blessing. That’s the promise,” he said.

He stressed that the Bible never promised that everyone would be as rich as business moguls like Aliko Dangote or Femi Otedola, nor did it call for believers to live in poverty.

“The promise is not that we are all supposed to be Dangote or Otedola, and the promise is not for us to sleep under the bridge,” he explained.

Banky W, who has in recent years combined ministry work with entertainment, lamented that some church leaders have twisted the message of prosperity to exploit their followers.

“There’s a segment of the church that has taken it and abused it, and I don’t like that,” he added.
